About Community Impact Month (Giving back is Essential):

McGraw-Hill Financial strongly believes in the motto, ‘Giving back is essential’. It extends to giving back to the society. MHFI launched this year Community Impact Month, in which 20+ employees will come together and work for solving any public problem in their community. MHFI grants $2000 per project and employees will spend their personal time for the project. This year S&P Capital IQ employees applied for 84 such projects. These employees work tirelessly to fulfill the motto and render true meaning to ‘Giving back is essential’.

About Aakar Asha- N. Swain Memorial Trust, Hyderabad:

‘Aakar Asha' is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization based in Hyderabad, dedicated to the cause of the physically disabled since 2001. Aakar (form) and Asha (hope) constitute the very foundations of life. We envision enabling the disabled persons in India to achieve a near normal quality of life through state of the art reconstruction surgery, advanced rehabilitation medicine and cutting edge research. To restore form and hope are corner stones of the Aakar Asha initiative.


OBJECTIVES:

The main objectives for which Aakar Asha was established are as follows:
1.       To build and operate effectively a Centre of Excellence to deliver quality care for the disabled on a very large scale.
2.       To train community care givers in identifying and rendering supportive care for the physically disabled and thus build alternative capacity within the community.
3.       To spread the facility of rehabilitation to remote villages through different organizational services networks including mobile medical services.
4.       To provide overall rehabilitation to every affected patient, regardless of their ability to afford treatment, through camps, institutional services and support of assistive devices.

Reconstructive Surgery:

People with limited access to these facilities will be treated free of cost or at subsidized rates. A strong team of plastic surgeons, anesthetists and physiotherapists, and an effective paramedical support team will be conducting the surgeries, following a policy of continuous evaluation and improvement.

Services Provided:
·         Ø  Cleft and Craniofacial program - Children born with cleft lip and/or palate, those with secondary problems following previous surgery,   and craniofacial disorders and syndromes will be the beneficiaries in this program.
·         Ø  Hand Surgery
·         Birth disorders eg. duplication, syndactylie, club hand, etc;
·         acute trauma and post-traumatic deformities;
·         acute burns and post-burns contractures;
·         infections;
·         paralytic and other neurologic disorders; vascular malformations and tumours rheumatoid and other arthritis
·         Ø  Micro Surgery - Microsurgery for Head & Neck, especially after surgical removal of tumors and after facial palsy; for the Hand                                               and Lower Limbs after trauma; in reconstruction of brachial plexus after paralysis.
·         Ø  Facial Plastic surgery service
·         Facial trauma of soft tissue and special structures;
·         Facial trauma involving single facial bone, two or panfacial fractures;
·         Birth deformities of face eg. Microtia, eyelid coloboma, nose deformities, macrostomia, and other syndromal disorders;
·         Orthognathic surgery
·         Vascular malformations, soft tissue and bony tumours;
·         Facial paralysis
·         Oculoplastic reconstruction
·         Burns contractures and other sequelae
·         Ø  Burns Reconstruction program
·         Acute burns of face, hands and lower limbs and burns of the body less than 30per cent will be treated.
·         Electric injuries and chemical burns (acid burns) will also be treated.
·         Post burns sequelae of the lower limbs and trunk will also be treated.
·         Ø  Reconstruction of Rare and Complex Disabilities program
·         Disorders included in this program will include lymphedema, Poland’s syndrome, chest wall deformities, gender dysphoria, midline dermoids, congenital torticollis, spastic hand, etc. which will require special skills and care pathway.
·         Ø  Orthopedic Reconstruction
·         Treatment of residual polio deformities will be the mainstay of this program. In addition, other orthopedic deformities will be treated eg. Club foot.

Volunteer work done at Medical Camp, Singareni Colony-Saidabad, Hyderabad:

1.       Survey and identifying suitable slum for awareness camp
2.       Conducting Camp at slum and conducting medical checkups
3.       Teaching health protection guidelines to slum dwellers
4.       Medical assistance to needy slum dwellers
5.       Identified 10 people with surgery requirement
6.       Supported for the surgery of 4 disabled people


Impact of Medical Camp, Singareni Colony-Saidabad, Hyderabad:

·         Patients can lead better life in the better way after the treatment
·         It would be a permanent solution to the patients problems
·         For creating awareness in the surroundings they live in.


FEEDBACK OF THE CIM VOLUNTEERS:

Harish Babu Ravula (Project Leader):-I am very happy that I got an opportunity to serve the Society through my company. It was remarkable experience to reach slums and educate the society and living style. I am satisfied and got good experience in my life with this project.

Suresh Manthri (Co-Leader):-It was a wonderful experience that I ever had. I am happy that I spend quality time with the patient. I am really happy that I could take part in such a wonderful event.

Srinath Reddimally:-The innocent eyes which were looking at us, the excited hand waves towards us, the shouts and laughs was really nice feeling.   We should continue to support those mentally challenged students through our CIM.

Devender Lakkam:-It was a great opportunity provided by my organization to serve slum and treat people in the manner they want. So, it gives immense happiness on that particular day watching so many parents showing interest in getting operated.

Harshavardhan Thippani:-In conclusion of this project I was so proud that, I was an active volunteer in such a unique project involving kids pertaining to slums. In this way, I thank to my organization in providing such kind of CIM Projects.

Prashanth Gunda:-I am very happy that I got an opportunity to serve the Society through my company. I sincerely enjoyed dedicating my weekend in serving many kinds of people in slums to improve their standard of living.
